Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia Plc and National ID- Ethiopia (NID) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement in April 2022, that would enable the setup of joint pilots for registration and E- KYC integration.
This strategic partnership will contribute to meeting Ethiopia’s digital objectives in line with the Digital Strategy 2025.
As part of the agreement, Safaricom Ethiopia today demonstrated the customer service experience process to officials from the NID and Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA). This innovative digital solution will enable Safaricom Ethiopia subscribers to register onto the network with ease and a good customer registration experience.
“We are preparing for our commercial launch later this year. Our world-class network will see us introduce best-in-class systems and process integration that works hand-in-hand with the digitized national ID system. We are proud to be in such a win-win partnership with the NID to support such initiatives that will transform the lives of Ethiopians,” said Matthew Harrison-Harvey, Chief External Affairs Officer of Safaricom Ethiopia.
Yodahe Zemichael, Executive Director of NID said, “With the National ID Program, we aim to cover up to 70 million people by the end of 2025 and accelerate the growth of the digital economy. We look forward to setting up a robust regulatory framework and practical solution through partnerships such as these that are geared towards achieving the Digital Ethiopia objectives. We are also keen to minimize risk of misuse of information and ensure we enhance inclusion across the country by removing barriers to access to information technology.”
